Ash Linnegar’s path to success is a powerful testament to perseverance and the value of never giving up, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Ash’s story exemplifies resilience, hard work, and the importance of support systems along the way.
After moving out of home at just 15, Ash faced numerous challenges while earning his VCAL certificate, including traveling over an hour to school each day. In 2017, he pursued a pre-apprenticeship at Kangan TAFE, but struggled to find an employer willing to sign him on to an apprenticeship, leaving him feeling defeated and questioning his future.
However, Ash’s story didn’t end there. In 2018, a connection through the apprenticeship agency ‘Apprenticeships Matter’ led Ash to his future employer, Ricky Arandt. Despite setbacks such as Covid 19, mental health struggles, and multiple employers, Ash continued pushing forward.
Tragedy struck when Ricky took his own life, and Ash struggled with the emotional toll of his work. The memories of working with Ricky became too overwhelming, leading Ash to briefly try a different field to escape the emotional weight. Despite these hardships, Ash once again persevered, enrolling in counselling through TAFE and continuing his studies. It was at this point that Ash applied for a scholarship from the Building & Construction Foundation through The Gordon, which provided the financial support he needed to complete his apprenticeship. This scholarship not only lifted a weight off his shoulders but also enabled him to finish his training and picture a brighter future.
Today, Ash is a full-time, leading-hand carpenter under the mentorship of his new boss, Ryan Mamo, where he is developing leadership skills and honing his expertise. With his apprenticeship now complete, Ash is now working towards his Certificate IV in Building & Construction, with aspirations to one day become a registered builder and run his own business.
Ash’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of education, mentorship, and timely support. He credits the Building & Construction Foundation for playing a crucial role in his success, believing the Foundation’s efforts to support individuals in the construction industry are invaluable for both newcomers and seasoned tradespeople alike.
